L’uomo di ieri, di oggi, di domani
È solo il fiore caduco di un albero perenne?
Se così fosse, mille volte più felici
sarebbero il filo d’erba e l’insetto
che non hanno l’idea della loro breve vita.
L’uomo è un occhio che vede
negli altri uomini
- come in altrettanti specchi –
i diversi momenti della sua vita,
del presente, del passato, del futuro.
Se ci fermiamo a guardarli,
almeno col rispettoso interesse
con cui osserviamo un fiore selvatico,
possiamo leggere sui loro volti
il romanzo non scritto
della loro vita.

The man of yesterday, today and tomorrow
Is it just the ephemeral flower of a perennial tree?
If so, a thousand times happier
would be the blade of grass and the insect
who have no idea of their short life.
Man is an eye that sees
in other men
- as in as many mirrors -
the different moments of his life,
of the present, of the past, of the future.
If we stop to look at them,
at least with respectful interest
with which we observe a wild flower,
we can read on their faces
the unwritten novel
of their life.
