L’idea che unifica le immagini

e i testi contenuti in questo libro

e’ semplice: ogni istante della vita
e’ come una scatola chiusa. Se la voglia
della scoperta e la scelta della speranza
ci danno il coraggio di aprirla
potremo trovare,
avvolti nella ruvida carta del mistero,
granelli di gioia.

Se il piacere di esistere si trovasse
soltanto oltre gli ottomila metri,
negli abissi del mare,
nei recinti di Wall Street,
sulla copertina di LIFE,
al centro della Casa Bianca
o del Cremlino,
la vita sarebbe una beffa universale.
Ma non e’ cosi:

un grande Disegno di Amore
permette al piu’ povero gitano
di vedere negli occhi di una zingara
tutti gli splendori dell'Alhambra,
e a ogni uomo di incontrarsi
con cio’ che lo aiuta a vivere:
fiore, conchiglia, persona,
purche’ abbia occhi buoni
e cuore aperto.

The idea that unifies the images

and the contained texts in this book

is simple: each instant of life

is like a closed box. If the desire

of discovery and the choice of hope

they give the courage of open it

we will find,

rapped in the rough paper of mystery,

grains of joy.

If the pleasure of living is

only beyond the highest mountains,

in the abysses of the sea,

in the enclosures of Wall Street

on the cover of Life,

to the centre of the White House

or of the Kremlin,

the life would be a universal mockery.

But it is not so:

a big Plan of Love

allows the poorest man

to see in the eyes of a gypsy

all the shines of the Alhambra,

and to each man to meet

with what help him to live:

flower, shell, person,

provided that he has compassionate eyes

and open heart.
