La sua bellezza non ha bisogno
di confronti o di concorsi:
non ha senso chiedersi se sia
la prima o l’ultima
della sua scogliera,
oppure perche non sia una medusa
o un pesce spada.
La sua linea candida e ingenua
sta bene sulla pietra scura
dove un raggio di sole
e una goccia d'acqua
la tengono viva.
Dentro un nido di formiche
sarebbe un monumento ingombrante;
al centro di Piazza San Pietro
sarebbe nulla.
Mi chiedo
se non ho la tendenza
a cercare persone semplici
per sentirmi grande
in mezzo a loro,
oppure a cercare grandi spazi
per farmi una grande cornice.
Small but alive
her beauty doesn't need
comparisons or contests:
it doesn't make sense to wonder if she is
the first or the last on
this rock
or because she is not jellyfish
or a swordfish.
Her candid and ingenue line
look well on the dark stone
where a ray of sun
and a drop of water
keep her alive.
Inside a nest of ants
it would be a bulky monument
in the centre of St. Peter Square
would be nothing.
I wonder
if I have the tendency
to look for simple people
to feel myself big
in the middle of them,
or to look for big spaces
so to make myself a big frame.
